Hi everybody! My name is Martin Varney, but please call me Marty. I am from Australia and I grew up in a town called Kippa Ring. It is on the Redcliffe Peninsula in the south eastern part of Queensland, roughly 30km north of Brisbane. As many of my students know that winter is my favorite season as the winters in Queensland are very mild. Winters in Australia are similar to mid Spring in Japan, cool in the morning to around 20 degrees during the day.

Throughout my schooling life I was heavily into sports starting with Australian Football at 7 years old until I was 10 years old. After that I started playing soccer and finished playing in proper teams when I was 25 years old. I have played every position in soccer with goalkeeping being my favorite.

After high school I studied Computer Engineering for a couple of years and went on to join the Australian Army. I was in the Army for 10 years and did many interesting activities and also had the privilege of travelling to some other countries. Some were good such as New Zealand in 2004, some were rather interesting including East Timor in 1999/2000 and Afghanistan in 2002.

I enjoy many hobbies such as hiking, camping, BBQ`s (especially Kangaroo), driving, cycling, travelling and any sport. I also enjoy playing Shogi and Chess.

I really enjoy teaching and travelling in Japan. There is so much to see and do and the people are always friendly and helpful.

Thank you everyone and have fun!
